Station 86

I am very excited by the recent opening of Station 86 in Gowerton! It is an independent coffee and kitchen destination, situated at 86 Sterry Road (SA4 3BW).
So first of all, what is the coffee like? They use a Nicuraguan coffee from the Welsh Coffee Company, which is roasted locally at Reynoldston on Gower. It is a medium roast blend of Cataui and Cattura varieties from the Jinotega region. The coffee is described as having ‘a tangy crisp acidity, clean flavour, well balanced with a sweet chocolate finish’. Ideal for espresso based drinks. I’ve sampled both a Flat White and Cortado and they were ‘proper peng’ which apparently is Essex speak for something of exceptional quality! As well as espresso based coffee drinks they also serve a range of teas and soft drinks.
So, what is the food like? Delicious is the answer to that! I tried the Smashed Avocado on Toasted Sourdough with pumpkin seeds, feta, chopped chilli and a fried egg. Again, it was ‘proper peng’! All food is cooked from fresh and many of the ingredients are locally sourced. The Breakfast menu is served until 11:30am and includes dishes such as bacon, sausage or vegetarian breakfast sandwiches, toasted tea cakes and Posh Toast (toasted malted bloomer, crunchy peanut butter, chopped dates, sliced banana, sunflower seeds, blueberries and cinnamon) – I will definitely be sampling that soon! The lunch menu is served from midday and includes various sandwiches, pitas, bagels and salads. There is also a soup of the day, examples of which are Tomato & Red Pepper, Cream of Mushroom, Spicy Parsnip, Sweet Potato & Carrot, Moroccan Chorizo & Chickpea. If you have a sweet tooth, they stock a range of cakes by Rose Hip and Vintage as well as Gower Doughgnuts. If you are looking for gluten or dairy free treats, there are daily specials such as the raw dark chocolate, peanut butter and mixed berry cheesecake.
The staff (Owner Jack, Essex boy Oscar & Jude) are very friendly and welcoming. Customer service is excellent. The atmosphere is relaxed and the surroundings are comfortable and very nicely decorated. They have been very busy since they first opened and long may this continue! Station 86 is a very welcome addition to the Speciality Coffee scene in Swansea. Well done guys!
