Girls Who Grind….. Coffee

A company that has recently caught my eye on social media is ‘Girls Who Grind….. Coffee.’  They are an all female small batch coffee roaster based in Warminster, Wiltshire.  They source speciality coffee from female producers and those who work to support them.  Their aim is to create awesome tasting coffee and to empower women in the coffee industry.

They offer a range of coffees on their website (www.girlswhogrindcoffee.com), as well as home brew equipment and other fun merchandise.  I love the funky packaging of the coffees!

I opted for two of the coffees.  The ‘Colombia El Tambo Cauca’ and the ‘Rwanda Nyabihu’.

The Colombian coffee is described as a sweet and smooth coffee reminiscent of milk chocolate and sour cherry brownie.  Tasting notes are of chocolate, sour cherry and peanut butter.  The roast profile is for espresso, perfect for my favourite flat white!  The coffee is produced in  the El Tambo, Cauca region of Colombia by an all female Amaca Cooperative who are supporting their families by producing this coffee.  Awesome work ladies!

The Rwandan coffee is described as a bright and jammy coffee full of spiced notes with a juicy, fruity finish.  Tasting notes are of cinnamon, lavender and pomegranate.  The roast profile is for filter, so perfect if prepared with the V60 dripper (see my previous blog post!)  The coffee is produced in the Nyabihu region of Rwanda by the Vunga Cooperative, which has three formidable ladies in management positions, including the President!  Although women are involved in a lot of the labour intensive work of coffee  production the world over, they are far less likely to be found in the top roles.  Well done ladies, a real example of girl power!

Girls who Grind is run by two ladies, Fi O’Brien and Casey Lalonde.  Fi, from Melbourne, has a background of café management and Casey, from the US,  has a background in coffee roasting.  Their paths crossed in Frome, Somerset and their dreams of owning a roastery were realised on a Wiltshire farm.  In a male dominated industry, these ladies have sourced some amazing coffees from female producers as well as highlighting the incredible stories behind them.

I love the ethos behind these coffees.  After all….. I am a Girl Who Grinds!
